Deadliest Train Crashes Near NYC, Tri-State Area
HOBOKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Thursday's train crash in Hoboken that left at least one dead and more than 100 others injured is one of several deadly crashes to have hit the Tri-State and nearby areas over the last five years.

Amtrak Derailment
Where: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What Happened: In April 2016, Two people were killed after Amtrak Train 89 jumped the rails after hitting a backhoe while traveling from New York City to Savannah, Georgia, CBS Baltimore reported.
The train had 341 people on board at the time of the crash. At least 30 were taken to area hospitals.
Metro-North Train Crash
Where: Valhalla, NY
On Feb. 3, 2015, a Harlem line train collided with Brody's Mercedes Benz SUVas it sat in the Commerce Street grade crossing in Valhalla, killing Brody and five passengers in the lead train car.

Walter Liedtke, a curator of European paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Eric Vandercar, 53, a senior managing director at Mesirow Financial; Joseph Nadol, 42, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. executive; Aditya Tomar, 41, who worked in asset management at JPMorgan; and Robert Dirks, 36, a research scientist at D.E. Shaw Research in Manhattan, were also killed.
Metro-North Train Crash
Where: Fairfield, Conn.
What Happened: Two Metro-North trains collided just east of the Fairfield Metro Station in May 2013, injuring at least 60 people. About 700 people were on board at the time of the crash.
The train was hit by a train heading west from New Haven to Grand Central on an adjacent track, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said. Some cars on the second train also derailed as a result of the collision.
Emergency workers quickly responded to the scene, the MTA said. Metro-North referred to the incident in a news release as a "major derailment."
Amtrak Train Crash
Where: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What Happened: An Amtrak train headed to New York City derailed in Philadelphia in May 2015, leaving at least five people dead and 140 more injured.
Northeast Regional Train 188 left Union Station in Washington, D.C. around 7 p.m., and was supposed to arrive at Penn Station at 10:34 p.m. Tuesday.
But the train derailed around 9:30 p.m. for unknown reasons and crashed in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. A four-alarm response was raised by the Philadelphia Fire Department, which also declared a level 3 mass casualty incident.
Spuyten Duyvil Metro-North Crash
Where: Bronx, NY
What Happened: Four people were killed, and 70 were injured, when a Metro-North commuter train derailed near the Spuyten Duyvil station in the Bronx in late 2013.
The southbound Train No. 8808, which was carrying 100 to 150 people, left Poughkeepsie at 5:54 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Grand Central Terminal at 7:43 a.m.
The passenger train from Poughkeepsie left the tracks with a sudden, violent shudder and roll along the curve at Spuyten Duyvil, where the speed limit drops from 70 mph down to 30.
All of the train's seven cars and its locomotive came off the curved track about 100 feet north of the nearby Spuyten Duyvil station around 7:20 a.m. Sunday, officials said. One car came to rest feet from the Harlem River.
PATH Commuter Train Crash
Where: Hoboken, NJ
What Happened: A PATH train coming into a Hoboken station struck the abutment on May 8, 2011, causing multiple injuries, authorities said.
There were 34 injuries altogether and those passengers were treated for non-life-threatening neck and back injuries at three different area hospitals: Hoboken University Medical Center, Jersey City Medical Center, and Christ Hospital.
