Recall Issued For Baby Wipes From Nutek Disposables Due To Bacterial Contamination

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A voluntary recall was issued Monday for baby wipes manufactured by Nutek Disposables Inc., due to bacterial contamination.

The company said it conducted tests for contamination following complaints from customers who noticed an unusual odor and discoloration, CBS News reported. Some of the wipes tested positive for a bacteria called Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia), CBS News reported..

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the bacteria is normally harmless in healthy people, but may cause problems in those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung conditions including cystic fibrosis, CBS News reported.

The company reported that some consumers have reported symptoms including rash, irritation, gastrointestinal and respiratory problems, but it has not been confirmed whether these health issues are related to the bacteria in the baby wipes, CBS News reported.

The baby wipes were sold at retailers including Diapers.com, Sam's Club, Walgreens, and Family Dollar stores under a variety of brand names:

• Cuties, sold at Internet/Various retailers
• Diapers.com, sold at Diapers.com;
• Femtex, sold at Family Dollar;
• Fred's, sold at Fred's;
• Kidgets, sold at Family Dollar;
• Member's Mark, sold at Sam's Club;
• Simply Right, sold at Sam's Club;
• Sunny Smiles, sold at Walgreens;
• Tender Touch, sold at various retailers;
• Well Beginnings (only affects lots manufactured by Nutek), sold at Walgreens.

The FDA said consumers who purchased the recalled baby wipes can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (855) 646-4351.
