Rangers Roll The Dice, Reach Deal With Troubled Forward Ryan Malone

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It's a risky move, but could end up benefiting the Rangers in a big way.

The team announced Thursday that it had reached an agreement on a contract with troubled forward Ryan Malone. The NY Post reported it to be a one-year, two-way deal for $700,000.

Malone, who has played 10 seasons in the NHL, including the last six with the Tampa Bay Lightning, is coming off a drunk driving and cocaine possession arrest in April. He was bought out by the Lightning after the season and had been trying to latch on with a team to repair his reputation.

The 34-year-old forward, who was taking part in informal practices with the Rangers prior to reaching the contract agreement, pleaded no contest to the DUI charge, had his license suspended for six months and was assigned to 50 hours of community service.

Malone has reportedly been participating in the NHL/NHLPA behavioral health program and was recently cleared to sign a contract by the NHL. If he completes the diversion program the drug charge will be dropped, Newsday reported.

While no lock to make the Rangers' roster, the 6-foot-4 left wing brings grit and experience. He has scored at least 20 goals six times, has 370 points in 641 career games and played for Team USA in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Malone figures to battle for a spot on the fourth line.
