Rachel Canning, NJ Teen Who Sued Parents, Announces College Pick
LINCOLN PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey high school honor student who sued her parents for tuition money after she moved out of their home has chosen a college.
Rachel Canning, 18, recently announced on her Facebook page that she plans to attend Western New England University as a biomedical engineering major, The Daily Record of Parsippany reported. Canning also said she would get a $56,000 scholarship.
A university spokeswoman told the newspaper Tuesday that Canning had been accepted into the private school in Massachusetts. But school officials declined comment Wednesday to The Associated Press and wouldn't say if she's getting any scholarship money.
She had alleged her parents were verbally abusive and threw her out of their Lincoln Park home for not following rules, which included demanding she break up with a boy they did not like.
But her parents said their daughter left on her own and was drinking, staying out past her curfew and was being disrespectful. Canning denied those accusations.
Canning dropped her suit last month and returned home.
She had been staying with the family of her best friend – which includes attorney and Morris County Freeholder John Inglesino. He was funding the lawsuit.
