Questions About Rye Playland's Future Persist At Boardwalk Grand Reopening

RYE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - The new boardwalk officially opened Thursday at Rye Playland but it was under a shadow of doubt regarding the future of the old amusement park.

As WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported, nearly 40,000 square feet of Brazilian hardwood make up the newly rebuilt boardwalk. The old boardwalk was destroyed by superstorm Sandy.

Opening day at Rye Playland is a month away.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino is hopeful county legislatures will vote on his proposed makeover that's been dubbed a reinvention.

But county board members said any action would be premature.

"We asked over the course of several months for some information about the financials, some of the marketing projections that they've made, what some of the assumptions are," Board Majority Leader Catherine Borgia told Murnane.

'We're losing $3 to $5 million each year. The public isn't coming in the numbers that they were so something does have to change here," said Astorino.

The county exec and Republican gubernatorial candidate said there has been no secrecy and that there's always been local and county input over nearly four years of announcements and arguing.
