Queens Taxi Fire Briefly Snags 4 Subway Lines

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The busy Queensboro Plaza subway station was engulfed in smoke and had to be evacuated Friday evening, after a taxi caught fire nearby.

The FDNY was called in at 6:40 p.m. for a fire in a yellow city taxi at 42-15 Crescent St. in Long Island City, Queens. No one was injured.

But service was suspended for about 20 to 30 minutes on the N, Q, R and No. 7 trains. The tracks for the lines are located directly above the street where the taxi burst into flames.

Video from the scene showed smoke blasting through the elevated station as commuters rushed to escape with their mouths covered.

Fire truck sirens were heard in the background.

The subway lines later resumed with residual delays.
