NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Queens man stole tens of thousands of dollars in Holocaust survivor benefits intended for his deceased mother, authorities said.

Gary Jacoby, 61, of Forest Hils, was arraigned Thursday evening in Queens Criminal Court. He is accused of stealing $56,000 in payments from the German government that should have ceased when his mother died in January 2008.

Jacoby is charged with one count of second-degree grand larceny and five counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.

He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court Oct. 14.

If convicted, Jacoby faces up to 15 years in prison.
