1-Year-Old Girl Struck, Killed By Vehicle In Queens; Mother Injured
UPDATED 03/24/17 12:08 a.m.
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A young girl is dead, and her mother was injured, after being struck by a vehicle in East Elmhurst, Queens Thursday evening.
Police told CBS2 the 1-year-old girl was in a stroller with her mother at 23rd Avenue and 94th Street in Queens at 8:42 p.m., and they were crossing the street in the crosswalk.
They were struck by a white Dodge ram pickup truck as its driver turned right from 23rd Avenue onto 94th Street, police said.
Witness says the child had blood all over her face and police were on the scene within four minutes, CBS2's Jessica Layton reported.
A photo from the scene showed the stroller crumpled next to the white pickup truck that struck the girl and her mother. Bags of groceries were left on the ground next to it.
The girl and her mother were both taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst in a police vehicle, and the girl was pronounced dead, police said. She had suffered severe head trauma, according to police.
The mother's condition was reported to be stable, police said.
Witnesses said both the mother and the driver were totally distraught.
"I heard the crunch of the stroller, but it was something more than a stroller – I could tell," said witness Reese Fluellin. "And she screams that you know, like, 'My baby! My baby!' We were just trying to figure out, you know, what we could do just to, you give her a better chance of surviving. But she was really bad."
"I'm froze. I feel shock. You know, I feel like, I'm thinking my son right away, you know?" said witness Leo Guerrero.
The driver who struck the mother and daughter stayed on the scene. He was seen speaking with police late Thursday night.
The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad was investigating late Thursday, police said. No charges had been filed as of early Friday morning.
