Pulaski Skyway To Close For Eight Weekends This Spring
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Motorists who use the Pulaski Skyway will need to find alternate routes starting this weekend.
The 83-year-old span will be closed in both directions over the course of eight weekends this spring.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, contractors will begin to remove and install floor beams. New deck panels also will be added to the north side.
The work is scheduled to take place on weekends through the end of May.
Detours will be posted.
Martin Robins, director emeritus of Rutgers University's Voorhees Transportation Center, said it'll be interesting to see how weekend traffic flows out of the Holland Tunnel.
"And particularly the outlet roads coming out of the Holland Tunnel, because now everything is going to get squeezed into the New Jersey Turnpike extension," he told WCBS 880's Levon Putney.
But Robins said it's hard to judge because weekend traffic is not usually as intense and may sort itself out.
The state Transportation Department says the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway project will extend the life of the bridge by 75 years.
