Protesters March Demanding Justice In Officer Shooting That Killed Akai Gurley
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- About 200 people gathered Saturday to protest the November shooting of an unarmed Brooklyn man by a police officer in a public housing building in Brooklyn.
Demonstrators chanted ``Hands up! Don't Shoot!'' as they marched Saturday in memory of Akai Gurley from the development to a police precinct, the New York Times reported.
About 75 protesters also gathered on the Brooklyn Bridge and attempted to shut it down, WCBS 880 reported.
Gurley, 28, was shot dead by rookie police officer Peter Liang on Nov. 20 in a dark stairwell at the Pink Houses in East New York in what police have called a tragic accident.
Brooklyn prosecutors said they were presenting the case to a grand jury.
The protesters carried on despite pleas from Mayor Bill de Blasio that such demonstrations halt until after funerals are held for two officers ambushed one week ago.
The funeral for one of the officers, Rafael Ramos, was held in Queens on Saturday. Plans for the second have not been announced.
