Prosecutors: Man Dies After Being Shot By Security Guard In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police and prosecutors were investigating Tuesday, following the death of a man three days after he was shot by a UPS security guard in Newark.
Around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, a retired police officer was working as an armed security guard with UPS when he allegedly shot Devin Grimes, 26, of Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office. Grimes was pronounced dead at 3:20 p.m. Monday, prosecutors said.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the security officer was sitting in a vehicle at 64 Gould Ave. in Newark, when two men came up to him, police said. One of the men took out a handgun and ordered the guard to get out of the car, prosecutors said.
While exiting the car, the security officer was in fear for his life as he fired the weapon and struck the suspect, prosecutors said. Grimes was taken to University Hospital in Newark, while the second suspect drove off in a white pickup truck, prosecutors said.
No charges had been filed in the case, and the investigation continued Tuesday, prosecutors said. The security officer's actions will be reviewed by a grand jury, prosecutors said.
The security officer, whose identity prosecutors declined to release, is a retired Union City police officer.
