Proposed Plans To Update Northeast Corridor, Commuter Lines On Display In Newark
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Plans for updating Amtrak, Metro North, New Jersey Transit, the Long Island Rail Road and other lines were on display in Newark Thursday.
"What's possible in the region? How do we want rail to serve us as a region is going to continue to grow. And then how much are we willing to invest in it?" Program Manager of the Northeast Corridor Future Project Rebecca Reyes Alicea said.
As WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported, updating existing lines to an ambitious, new Boston to New York line with a new track is among the proposals.
"Once you make that investment, the benefits that follow are enormous," James Greller said, transportation planner for the Hudson County Improvement Authority.
One commuter who said he's been riding Northeast Corridor trains for half a century checked out the plans.
"Repairs that are absolutely essential at this time, because we see a huge amount of deterioration," he said.
