Power Outage Strikes Part Of Chelsea
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Con Edison crews are on the scene of a power outage in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.
The outage began at about 7 a.m. Friday.
Con Edison spokesman Sidney Alvarez said several crews responded to the affected buildings on 30th Street between 8th and 9th avenues. The utility says about 700 customers are without power.
Alvarez said the outage appears to be related to a feeder cable problem and said crews are laying new cables.
The outage happened as temperatures are dangerously low in Manhattan with a record of 2 degrees recorded in Central Park.
"Feels a little cold," resident Kristin Johnson-Land said. "Our boiler is down too, no hot water."
"No heat," another woman told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa. "Just got to learn to get dressed quickly."
Many businesses in the area, like the Manhattan West Hotel, had to persevere. Paula works at the front desk and doesn't have anything to offer her customers.
"They are actually complaining about the cold weather and the no hot water as well, but it is feeling really bad inside," she told WCBS 880's Monica Miller.
Alvarez said they are hoping to have service restored by late afternoon or early evening.
