Postal Worker Accused Of Throwing Away, Not Delivering 2,000 Pieces Of Mail
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A U.S. postal worker was charged by federal authorities Monday with failing to deliver about 2,000 of pieces of mail on his Queens Village route.
Norberto Cintron is a regular mail carrier assigned to the Queens Village Post Office, at 20-920 Jamaica Ave. in Queens, according to a federal complaint.
Around April 28, the acting manager of the Post Office contacted the postal Inspector General's office hotline after learning that mail had been found in collection boxes on Hillside Avenue and had not been delivered, the complaint said.
An anonymous customer had filed a note claiming that a mail carrier had not been delivering all of his assigned mail. The manager determined that the undelivered mail had been assigned to Cintron, the complaint said.
On May 1, the Inspector General's office interviewed Cintron, the complaint said. He said he had started throwing out mil about five or six months earlier – stuffing it in a garbage bag and throwing it away, the complaint said.
Cintron also admitted that he threw away some loose or bundled mail directly without bagging it, the complaint said. He admitted that he threw mail away one to two times a week, the complaint said.
Cintron denied ever dumping parcels or stealing mail, the complaint said.
Prosecutors said by a "conservative estimate," Cintron had thrown away or otherwise failed to deliver about 2,000 pieces of mail, the complaint said.
