Polyamorous Community Offers 'Judgment-Free' Living Space In Bushwick

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new home for members of the polyamorous community in Bushwick, Brooklyn is looking for tenants who are willing to live in a judgment-free environment.

The house includes a hot tub and a wet bar gazebo, and is occupied by people who practice polyamory – the practice of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the consent of all involved, according to a DNAInfo report.

A primary requirement for living in the house is acceptance of all lifestyles, according to Leon Feingold, the realtor for the building and the cofounder of the group Open Love NY.

"This is just a home for people who are part of most of the poly community, and the whole idea is that it's a judgment-free zone. People are accepting of other people's lifestyles, whatever that might mean," Feingold told 1010 WINS.

The polyamorous community sometimes has difficulty finding space where the lifestyles of all involved will be accepted, according to Feingold.

"Finding a safe space for people in these communities is often very challenging. They have personal preferences, they have desires, they have ideas, they have lifestyles, they have multiple dates that may not fly well with normal neighbors," Feingold said.

Anyone who moves into the house must likewise be accepting of others' lifestyles, Feingold said.

"The only requirement in addition to financial security to be able to rent a room here is that you commit to understanding that other people who will be living there may have different lifestyles, or different opinions, and you have to be accepting of that," he said.

The building is located a block from the Myrtle Avenue J, M and Z Train stop, and the Open Love NY group calls it "Hacienda Villa," DNAInfo reported. The building is owned by a polyamory community member who will live in an apartment with his girlfriend on the first floor, the publication reported.

There are 15 rooms in the three-story building, and each floor is an individual apartment where new roommates will be vetted by community members, the publication reported. The rent ranges from $750 to $1,500 a month, the publication reported.

The community is not actively advertising for members, but is rather open to friends and friends of friends, the publication reported. Some units already have been rented out, and the first floor will be ready for tenants to move in by July, the publication reported.
