Poll: Christie's Approval Ratings Stabilize
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The recent plunge in approval ratings for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may be ending.
A new poll shows approval of Christie among New Jersey residents hovering at 51 percent. That roughly matches the 50 percent approval rating he received in February, but is still 14 points lower than December, when the scandal over lane closures near the George Washington Bridge became public.
41 percent disapprove, according to the poll.
The Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press Poll surveyed 803 New Jersey residents and was conducted from Mar. 30 - Apr. 1. The poll was conducted after a Christie administration report by attorney Randy Mastro cleared Christie of any involvement in the decision to close down the traffic lanes.
Critics assailed the report as "whitewash."
"The bleeding has stopped for now. The poll was conducted after the Mastro report was released, but this does not seem to be the reason why Christie's ratings have stabilized. In fact, few New Jerseyans agree with the report's conclusions," said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Only 30 percent called the report fair and unbiased, according to the poll. Fifty two percent said the report was done to help Christie's reputation. Sixty one percent said Christie hasn't come clean about the closures.
