Police: Taxi Driver Unwittingly Gave Long Island Bank Robber A Getaway

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police say a taxi driver on Long Island unknowingly helped a bank robber flee the scene of the crime.

According to police, the male suspect walked into the Astoria Federal Savings Bank located at 3535 Long Beach Rd. in Oceanside on Friday and gave the teller a note demanding cash.

The suspect then left the bank with an unknown amount of money and hopped into a waiting taxi, which dropped him off at Clive Street, police said.

The taxi driver was completely unaware of what had transpired in the bank, officials said.

Police described the suspect as 5'7" tall, between 35 and 40 years old, balding with blond hair, a mustache and glasses. He was wearing a black tee-shirt with white writing, blue jeans and sneakers.

Thirteen employees and two customers were in the bank at the time of the robbery. There were no injuries reported.

Anyone with information regarding the bank robbery is urged to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
