Police: Suspect Beat Man With Hammer In LES Public Housing Apartment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were asking the public for help Tuesday in finding a suspect who they said struck another man multiple times in the head in a Lower East Side public housing apartment last month.

The 22-year-old man was sleeping in his own apartment on Madison Street, in the Henry Rutgers Houses development, around 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, police said. He woke up to find the suspect beating him in the head with a hammer, police said.

The victim tried to get out of his apartment, but the suspect hit him again in the head and arm, police said.

The suspect then ran off, and the victim's condition was reported as stable at Bellevue Hospital Center after the attack, police said.

Police have released a surveillance image of the suspect.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
