Suspect Shot And Killed By Police After Violent Struggle Inside Moving Car In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - One person has been fatally shot by an NYPD officer Thursday afternoon in the Norwood section of the Bronx.

Sources tell CBS2 officers at the scene called for assistance before the shooting started.

NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan held a news conference Thursday evening describing the incident as an arrest gone bad involving a man who avoided officers by getting back into a vehicle.

"The male initiative a violent struggle. The sergeant immediately deployed his Taser for multiple cycles," said Monahan.

According to police, the man was not stopped and began driving away with one officer still in the vehicle while another officer outside the car jumped clear.

The man and police struggled for a minute and a half before a single shot was fired, hitting the man in the chest, said Monahan.

A male passenger in the car was unharmed.

It is unclear if the person shot by police had a gun, but police said he had a "substantial amount of narcotics" on him including cocaine, heroin and Molly.

NYPD Update On Police-Involved Fatal Shooting

No police were injured in the incident, but the NYPD said three officers went to the hospital due to ringing in their ears.

The NYPD posted a tweet warning people to avoid the area of East 211st Street and Bainbridge Avenue due to the ongoing investigation.

It is the third police-involved shooting this week and the second deadly incident. The first two NYPD shootings involved suspects who were carrying firearms and at least one of those men opened fire at officers.
