Police searching for person who fled deadly crash in Elizabeth

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- A taxi driver and his passenger were killed in a violent crash early Monday morning in Elizabeth.

CBS New York has obtained surveillance video and spoke with the victim's grieving family.

Loved ones set up a makeshift memorial at the corner of East Grand and Spring streets, mourning the loss of taxi driver Juan Carlos.

"My brother was a good person. The family loves him a lot," sister Veronica Alvear said.

Video shows the moment police say a Hyundai ran a red light and crashed into the taxi head on.

"He was driving a passenger and someone blew a red light. Apparently, there was a chase. Police say they weren't really chasing, they were far back," nephew David Yepez said.

In addition to Carlos, his passenger were killed.

Carlos' nephew's pregnant wife said, "Uncle Carlos'" death is a huge loss for their family.

"He was a family man. He loved his family, loved his friends. I'll never forget when he walked in the room at our wedding. He loved my husband and we were hoping he could meet our twins and he's not going to get that chance now," Katelynn Yepez said.

Carlos, 54, emigrated from Ecuador 26 years ago and had been working as a taxi driver in Elizabeth for years.

"It has been rough for our family, for sure. But we're relieved that it seems he didn't suffer. I hope whoever did this pays for their actions," David Yepez said.

Police arrested two people in the Hyundai, but said a third ran from the scene. Police said they are actively looking for that person.
