Police Searching For Driver In Fatal Bronx Hit-And-Run

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a father in the Bronx on Monday evening.

The deadly collision happened just before 7 p.m. Monday at the intersection of West 225th Street and Broadway in Marble Hill.

Daniel Cabrera, 38, was struck by a light gray Dodge Magnum station wagon as he tried to cross the street, police said. The driver sped away as witnesses rushed to help, cops said.

"I heard a noise and then I heard a 'boom,'" said witness David Gibbs. "I say, 'Somebody got hit' and everybody's yelling, 'Dial 911, dial 911,' and he sped off right across the bridge."

Cabrera was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was a budget manager at Columbia University and was headed to the Metro-North train station on his way home to Westchester County, CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported.

With train tracks above, the area where the collision occurred is known for having a lot of traffic and being dangerous for pedestrians.

"That's why I always cross on that side," one man said. "I can't cross on this side. I be too scared."

Cabrera's family remembered him Tuesday as someone who was kind and generous.

"He was very smart," said Courtney Cabrera, his niece. "He helped me get into school. And I always looked up to him."

Cabrera's family is urging the driver to come forward.

"If you didn't realize what you did, do the right thing and turn yourself in," Courtney Cabrera said. "Other than that, I just hope that the NYPD do their best to find out who did this."

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS, visit www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
