Police Search For Suspect In Thefts Of Checks From Queens Building Mailboxes

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Monday were asking the public to help them find a suspected thief who has been taking checks from a Queens apartment building.

The thefts all happened at the same apartment building on 71st Avenue in Forest Hills, Queens, police said.

In eight different incidents, the thief stole the mail from the victims' mailboxes, altered any checks to a larger sum of money, and deposited the checks into ATMs, police said.

The suspect or suspects then removed cash from the accounts, police said.

Police released a photo of a suspect at a Bank of America at 248 E. Fordham Rd. in the Bronx.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 247637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
