Police Release Sketch Following Attempted Luring Of Child In Astoria

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have issued a warning to parents in Astoria, Queens following an attempted luring incident.

The New York Police Department has released a sketch of the man who they say tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his sport utility vehicle on 49th Street and Ditmars Boulevard on Wednesday, just after 4 p.m., CBS 2's John Slattery reported.

"The longer she spoke to him, the more she figured something was wrong," said the father of the 12-year-old who was approached.

Police said the man, who was driving a light-colored SUV, pulled along side the young girl and tried to get her inside his vehicle.

"He told her he knows me somehow or that he's a friend of her father. So, she declined and then he said 'I have some candy for you,'" the girl's father said.

A friend of the girl's mother was across the street at the time of the incident and saw the entire encounter, Slattery reported.

"She called her. My daughter just crossed to the other side of the street. (And the guy drove off?) Yea, the guy drove off," according to the father.

The sketch of the suspect was composed with the girls help.

"She saw him very closely, so she was able to give them a sketch," said the girl's father.

Now, the family and police are hoping the drawing will give police a lead on just who to pursue.
