Police: Newark Man Arrested In Violent Encounter With Security Guard, State Detective
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police have arrested a man wanted in connection with a violent encounter in Newark with a security guard at a rental car company and a New Jersey State Police detective.
Tarik Smith, 26, of Newark is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a report of a stolen car at the Alamo Rent A Car on Route 1 and 9 near Newark Airport, officials said.
The suspect was reportedly shot at by an off-duty police officer working security at the rental car location before taking off in a stolen silver Chevrolet Monte Carlo, CBS 2's Steve Langford reported Tuesday.
The suspect sped through the streets of Newark before getting into an accident with a New Jersey State Police cruiser, 1010 WINS' Kevin Rincon reported. A state police detective fired his weapon at Smith during the encounter, officials said.
The detective was taken to a hospital with minor injuries following the confrontation, officials said.
Smith managed to flee the scene and the Monte Carlo was found abandoned on South 11th Street and Ninth Avenue in Newark, officials said. The car had front-end damage and what appears to be a bullet hole in the front windshield.
Smith was found Tuesday night at a hospital in Harlem where he was being treated for a gunshot wound, officials said.
He is being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey. Bail is set at $750,000.
