Police Make Two DWI Arrests In Suffolk County

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Suffolk County arrested two people in separate DWI incidents Sunday morning.

The first arrest took place at 12:40 a.m. on the eastbound side of Sunrise Highway at the exit 58 South ramp.

Police said they arrested a Mastic Beach woman for driving while intoxicated with a 2-year-old boy in the car.

The woman, identified as Julieann Klopfer, was stopped and evaluated at a police checkpoint on the ramp. Police said officers found Klopfer to be drunk with her fiance's son was in the back seat of the 1998 Mercedes.

Klopfer, 33, was charged with DWI, DWI under Leandra's Law, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said seven other drivers were issued traffic summonses at the checkpoint.

Later Sunday morning, around 5 a.m, Suffolk County Highway Patrol officers arrested a man after he lost control of his car and crashed while driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway, authorities said.

James T. Reynolds II was initially travelling eastbound on the LIE in a 2004 Honda Civic when highway patrol officers said they saw him enter the rest area located between exits 51 and 52 and make a u-turn.

The 27-year-old exited the rest area and drove westbound on the eastbound side of the LIE, police said. He then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the trees on the right shoulder of the road.

Reynolds, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with DWI and driving in the wrong direction.
