Staten Island Carjacking Suspect Sought After Shooting Near Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police opened fire on a carjacking suspect near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza Monday morning, sources told CBS 2.
Authorities had been on the lookout for a 2006 black Hummer that police said was stolen early Sunday morning.
Around 6 a.m. Sunday, police said 25-year-old Tyrell Brown walked up to a 29-year-old man on Holland Avenue, pulled out a gun and demanded money.
Brown then made the victim lay on the ground before taking off in the man's Hummer, police said.
Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority police later spotted the vehicle around 1:25 a.m. Monday heading towards Staten Island on the upper level of the bridge, sources said.
When police pulled over the car, a woman got out and the vehicle took off, sources said. As the driver sped away, two officers fired four shots, missing the vehicle, sources said.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in the area of Narrows Road North and Stuben Street. Police said the driver took off on foot. The woman was taken into custody.
There are no reports of any injuries.
Police are still searching for Brown.
He is described as a black man, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and has "Dorothea" tattooed on his neck, police said. He was last seen wearing a red hooded jacket and tan pants.
