Police: Man Pretended To Be Cop, Stole Car In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police were searching Thursday for a suspect who allegedly pretended to be a police officer and stole a man's car in the Bronx last month.
The 31-year-old victim had been trying to sell his 2003 black Mercury Mountaineer, which was parked in front of 1703 Jerome Ave. in the Bronx, police said.
Around 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, the suspect came up and asked about the sport-utility vehicle and asked if he could take it for a test drive, police said.
The victim was leery, but the suspect then showed what the victim thought was a police shield and claimed to be a police officer, police said.
The victim then agreed and went to get the title of the vehicle, police said. The suspect hopped in the car and drove off, and neither he nor the car have been seen since, police said.
The suspect was described as being in his early 40s and weighing about 300 pounds.
