Police: Homeless Man Critically Injured In Hit-And-Run Crash On Long Island

EAST FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a homeless man critically injured on Long Island.

The incident occurred around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday in East Farmingdale.

The victim, who is in his 60s, was walking on Wellwood Avenue when he was struck by a 2008 Mercedes-Benz, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes got out of the car and tried to stop traffic when a second vehicle struck the injured pedestrian and fled the scene, police said.

The second car is described as an older model silver Nissan Altima, which was last seen heading southbound on Wellwood Avenue in the direction of Southern State Parkway, police said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is being treated for head and internal injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes was not charged.
