Police: Georgia Man Charged In Fatal NYC Bus Crash
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police have charged a man from Georgia with vehicular manslaughter after they said he stole a delivery truck and collided with a city bus in the West Village, killing the bus driver and injuring several others.
Police arrested 22-year-old Dominic Whilby of Griffin, Ga. on Thursday. He is also charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and felony assault.
Police said the truck was stolen around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday on West 16th Street. Minutes later, the truck crashed into the bus at West 14th Street and 7th Avenue, police said.
The impact was so strong, it sent both vehicles crashing into a building and several parked cars. The scaffolding that was in front of the building collapsed onto the wreckage.
The bus driver, William Pena, was ejected from the bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Five others, including Whilby, were hurt.
Pena was the first MTA bus driver killed in a collision in more than 14 years, the agency said. He is survived by his wife and his teenage daughter.
