Police: EMTs In Perth Amboy Catch Man Who Tried To Steal Ambulance

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man is accused of trying to steal an ambulance while its crew was caring for another person nearby.

According to police, the emergency medical technicians were attending to a patient on Sunday when the ambulance's siren went off outside.

The siren is a safety feature that activates when the vehicle is shifted out of park.

The EMTs ran outside to find a man in the driver's seat. The suspect then fled on foot when he saw the crew members.

The EMTs gave chase and soon captured him.

Perth Amboy police told NJ.com that Marco Cabrera, 25, was charged with attempted theft of a vehicle and drunken driving.

Cabrera's bail was set at $10,000 cash. It was unclear Monday if he had retained an attorney.
