Suspect Dead After Chase, Police-Involved Shooting In Rutherford
RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A suspect is dead in a police-involved shooting following a chase in northern New Jersey early Tuesday morning.
Authorities said the chase began in Lyndhurst over a stolen vehicle and ended around 2:34 a.m. with shots fired at the intersection of Rutherford Avenue and Ridge Road in Rutherford.
Attorney General's office spokesman Paul Loriquet said one occupant of an SUV was shot and pronounced dead at a hospital. The other occupant was unharmed and was arrested.
Loriquet says the preliminary investigation shows a state trooper and police officers from Lyndhurst and Rutherford were involved in the chase.
People who live nearby described hearing multiple gunshots.
"About 12 pops which I thought originally were firecrackers," one man told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. "About six of one caliber and about another five or six of another caliber."
"It was like car screeches," another woman said. "It sounded like they were going around a turn and spinning and then you just heard gunshots. Maybe like six or seven and then six or seven again."
"It's a nice place, it's quiet. We all were in shock after we heard the shots," neighbor Ali Askin told CBS 2's Diane Macedo. "It's crazy."
Loriquet says the criminal justice division is investigating because the trooper was involved in the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing.
