2 Arrested In Connection To Discovery Of Woman's Body Parts In The Bronx
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Two people were arrested late Wednesday for the murder and dismemberment of a woman in the Bronx.
Sources tell CBS2 25-year-old Lisa Marie Velasquez was killed using a hammer, with her body parts found bagged and dismembered in two different borough parks in the span of four days.
Police say part of Velasquez's body was found inside garbage bags near Crotona Park last Friday. The rest of her remains were discovered Tuesday at Barretto Point Park.
Her family says they last saw her on August 21st at her home in the Melrose Houses. They reported her missing and even put together a flier with her picture on it.
"The last thing my mother remembers is her coming, grabbing her bag and being in a rush saying she had to go help a friend that was in danger and she ran out of the house," Velasquez's aunt said.
On Wednesday, police turned their attention towards a home on Longfellow Avenue and appeared to be removing evidence in brown paper bags. Sources say it was connection to the investigation into Velasquez's brutal murder, but it wasn't immediately clear how.
For the family, the tragedy is all-too familiar. In 2006, Velasquez's mother, Marilyn Ginel, was found murdered inside the Bronxdale Houses. She'd been stabbed, and was pregnant at the time.
Her boyfriend was later found guilty. Family members say Ginel was nine months pregnant when she was tortured in front of her three kids, one of whom was Velasquez.
31-year-old Daquan Wheeler and 30-year-old Ciara Martinez were taken into custody late Wednesday and charged with murder, manslaughter, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon.
