Police Believe Disturbed Man Slashed Mother, Set Fire In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police believe a man described as emotionally disturbed was behind a fire that broke out Tuesday in the Bronx.

Smoke could be seen pouring from the window of a 13th-floor apartment at 1330 Webster Ave., near 169th Street, around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported. The building is part of the Butler Houses public development.

Firefighters went in and quickly extinguished the fire, but they had to subdue the 18-year-old man and get him out, Rincon reported. Police took him into custody.

Police said the man's 42-year-old mother suffered lacerations to her face, and told them her son had slashed her with an unknown object and locked himself in a room where he set fire.

The fire was contained to one apartment, and the cause remained under investigation late Tuesday. Two police officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation, police said.

The suspect was being evaluated at an area hospital late Tuesday and charges were pending.
