Police: 2 People Killed In Multi-Vehicle Crash On I-95 In Rye
RYE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the New England Thruway in Rye on Monday afternoon, police said.
As CBS2's Lou Young reported, the fatalities occurred during the second of two accidents on an elevated section of Interstate 95 where it merges with I-287.
New York State Police said the accident was definitely linked to slick road conditions from the ongoing storm, and involved a minivan and a small transport bus headed north.
State Police Troop T Commander Capt. Richard Mazzone said the driver from the first accident were out of their vehicles when tragedy struck just after 2 p.m.
"It was a two-vehicle accident. We're in the process of investigating that accident, and another uninvolved vehicle appears to have lost control and struck the two vehicles that were involved in the initial accident, and at that time also struck the operators of those two vehicles," Mazzone said.
It appeared that the shuttle bus had collided with a small sedan, and the minivan slammed into two cars that were pulled over from the earlier accident – killing their drivers and colliding with several other cars on the highway.
As one flatbed tow truck left the scene, one vehicle had its front end crumpled in to the windshield, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.
Northbound lanes of the highway between exits 21 and 22 were closed on Monday afternoon following the accident. Motorists already delayed were left not knowing whether they would get where they were going.
"I'm going back to Boston," one man said. "Hopefully I can make it."
Nearly three hours after the accident, northbound I-95 remained jammed just south of the Connecticut state line as of 5 p.m. Some motorists were going to local streets in Port Chester and Rye, while others were using a turnaround point on Midland Avenue to get back onto the onbound ramp and continue their trip.
The lanes had been reopened by Monday evening.
