Cops: Pizza Delivery Man Dies After Being Shot, Crashing Car In New Jersey

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A pizza delivery man was pronounced dead after police say he was shot while on the clock in Passaic County, New Jersey early Sunday.

Police said they responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident near 503 Paulison Ave. in Clifton just after 2:15 a.m. When officers arrived, they discovered 27-year-old Dervy Almonte-Moore, of Elmwood Park, unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound behind the wheel of a 1998 Toyota Camry, which had struck a tree.

The victim was rushed to Saint Joseph's University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said Almonte-Moore was working as a pizza delivery driver for Jumbo's Pizza in Wallington and may have been making a delivery when he was shot near 582 Paulison Ave., a short distance away from where he eventually crashed into a tree.

The owner of the pizza shop told CBS2 the victim was a native of the Dominican Republic who recently became an American citizen. He also said Almonte-Moore had been putting himself through Bergen Community College with dreams of being a radiologist.

"He was always smiling, always in a good mood," Faris Khatibi said. "He was one of the most honest people I've met all my life.

"He did not deserve to die. He was too young and just perfect, you know?"
