Petition Calls For Possible Ban On Charcoal Grilling In Prospect Park
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A proposal that called for a complete revamp of - and possible total ban on - charcoal grilling in Prospect Park doesn't seem to be picking up much support.
Brooklyn resident Daz Ryan launched the change.org petition.
"It is illegal to light a cigarette in any NYC public park, but the Prospect Park Alliance and the NYC Parks Department permit and encourage charcoal barbecuing in Prospect Park even though smoke from from charcoal grills contains numerous carcinogens and is much more toxic than cigarette smoke," Ryan wrote in his petition. "There is just too much smoke!"
"That is an issue for the elderly, for the ill, for the children, for the asthmatics in this area," Carmen Almito told 1010 WINS reporter Roger Stern.
"Proposed changes could include moving designated areas away from residential areas, away from the parkside and away from the ball field and playgrounds, or even perhaps banning barbecuing entirely! (For example, Central Park in Manhattan does not permit any barbecues)," Ryan wrote.
As of Monday morning, the petition had reached just 100 signatures.
The petition also included a prompt for residents to reach out to Mayor de Blasio and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.
