Paterson Firefighter Faces Murder, Other Charges In Fatal Shooting
PATERSON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- firefighter from Paterson has been arrested and charged with murder.
He's accused of shooting and killing a man in the street in the middle of the day.
As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, surveillance video from a corner deli shows multiple people walking from different angles towards a fire hydrant on the corner of Madison and Essex Streets. They suddenly scattered after shots were fired in broad daylight leaving one dead.
Police said a Paterson firefighter was involved in the shooting.
"Detectives were able to identify one individual, Kaheem Hunt, 30-years-old, a resident of the city of Paterson as a perpetrator to murder," Paterson Police Captain Richard Reyes said.
A man trained to save lives, has been accused of taking one.
"Any first responders, any of us, our mission is to save lives, take care of anyone in any condition," Reyes said.
Making the case more disturbing is that Hunt is also a veteran of the U.S. Army. He pleaded not guilty to murder charges, and will be detained until trial.
"The reason for the motion is the serious nature of charges along with no release recommended by pre-trial services," prosecutor Eileen Kane said.
Moments after the deadly shooting, video showed people rushing over to the man in the red shirt lying on the cement.
On Thursday, a graffiti artist sprayed a memorial to 39-year-old Juan Martinez -- shot and killed on May 1, at 4:45 p.m.
Friends said Martinez was a rapper who promoted peace on the streets. There was no word on the motive, police believe more than one other individual may have been involved.
