Park Slope Residents: Nothing Being Done About Giant Sidewalk Sinkhole

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A sidewalk sinkhole has pedestrians watching their step on a block in Brooklyn.

As CBS2's Steve Langford reported, the sinkhole on 10th Street near 4th Avenue in Park Slope is so deep it looks like an open cave.

"I reported this June 23 to 311," said one neighbor.

A month later the gaping hole is still there in front of an empty home, and so far, no one has fallen in.

"Let's put it this way: I got five grandchildren, three of them ride bikes up and down here," said William Snyder.

To give you an idea of how deep and dangerous the sinkhole is, Langford put a piece of wood about 6 feet tall into the depths of the cavern and it completely disappeared.

"I made this makeshift stand yesterday so that no one would walk on it," said Bill Palumbo, who owns the home next door.

Palumbo said he's called every agency he can think of, but has had no results.

The listed owner of the property died recently, but a family member stopped by late this week, took a look and then left, according to Palumbo.

"The guy shows up yesterday very upset, says the house is in litigation and pretty much there's nothing he can do about it," he said.

The company managing the property said it's obtaining client approval to fix the giant hole, Langford reported. But so far, they have no time frame for a fix.

A phone call to the city's Department of Transportation offered no more guidance, Langford reported.

Neighbors said they can't believe the failure to act.

"I've got a 7-year-old daughter. So, it's an impediment clearly, it's dangerous," said Jamal Igle.

The DOT later responded to Langford, saying they have no complaints or notice of violation for the property.
