Parishioners Look To Repair Bells, Organ System Silenced By Lightning At Jersey City Church
JERSEY CITY, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- Church bells and a century-old organ system at a Jersey City church have been silenced following a lightning strike.
Worshipers at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church have been forced to improvise with other instruments since the July storm.
Now, parishioners are trying to raise some of the $33,000 needed for repairs.
"St. Joseph's is my life. It's like my child, and so yes it's sad to me. In 1993 we renovated the whole organ system, put $60,000 into the upgrade, state of the art. So, now we're back to square one again," the pastor said.
The pastor added that the church was struck by lightning 26-years-ago, but the damage wasn't as bad.
