Parishioner: Suspect Accused Of Stealing LI Church Donation Box Will 'Answer To A Higher Power'
EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Police on Long Island are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a man who stole a church donation box in broad daylight.
Suffolk County police are asking the public's help in identifying the suspect. They say he entered St. Anthony's Church in East Northport around 1:45 p.m. on Feb. 2 and stole the box.
It was not known how much cash was in the box.
Parishioners said they're stunned by the theft.
"I can't believe anyone would steal from a church but they're gonna have to answer to a higher power someday," Roberta told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "I don't think there's anything lower that someone can do by stealing from those who are trying to help others."
Police released a surveillance photo of the suspect, who's described as a white man with a thin to medium build and gray hair. He was wearing a red T-shirt at the time of the theft.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
