Palisades Commission Asks LG To Lower Height Of Planned New Headquarters
FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - The Palisades Interstate Park Commission has voted to ask an electronics company to reduce the height of a planned building along the Hudson River.
The commission unanimously approved a resolution Monday night that stated LG Electronics' proposed 143-foot-high headquarters in Englewood Cliffs poses a threat to the scenic beauty to the area north of the George Washington Bridge.
Opponents have argued the building in Englewood Cliffs exceeds a 35-foot height limit on buildings.
The commission can't force LG Electronics to reconsider the building's height, but wanted to put its position on the record, according to The Record newspaper.
Opponents say the building will open the door for more high-rise buildings along the Palisades and compromise the view from the Hudson River and Manhattan. They challenged a zoning variance in court, but a Superior Court judge upheld the action. Environmental and preservation groups are appealing the decision.
LG broke ground on the 26-acre site last fall. It's pledged to plant 700 new trees on the property.
LG officials said the $300 million, energy-efficient project will blend into its surroundings and boost the economy. It is also expected to create about 2,200 construction jobs, officials said.
The new LG headquarters is expected to open in 2017.
