Truck Overturns On Long Island Expressway, 4 Injuries Reported

QUEENS, NY (CBSNewYork) – An overturned truck on the Long Island Expressway left four people injured and brought traffic in Queens to a standstill Tuesday afternoon.

Chopper 2 was over the scene as a dump truck hit the divider near Exit 25 on the LIE and flipped over on its side in the eastbound lanes.

"It was a very, very strong noise. Like boom!" Mohammad Rauf told CBS2's Scott Rapoport.

Debris from the trailer was thrown all over the westbound lanes, stopping traffic in both directions for several hours.

A light pole was knocked down and a minivan was also seen pulling off the road with heavy damage to its side. In total, four people suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The LIE was closed in both directions at Kissena Boulevard for several hours. Traffic in the westbound lanes was allowed to drive around the debris left by the truck as eastbound cars were completely blocked off by the wrecked vehicle.

Emergency crews were able to clear all the eastbound lanes on the LIE by around 3:30 p.m. but, one westbound lane remained closed while workers repaired the downed light pole.
