Opponent Profile: Kyle Orton, Buffalo Bills Looking For Repeat Win Over Jets
By Tyson Rauch
On Sunday the New York Jets (2-8) return from their bye to take on the Buffalo Bills (5-5) at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Bills trampled the Jets 43-23 on October 26th but followed up that dominant performance with two disappointing losses. This game falls into the must win category for Buffalo if the team wants to remain in contention for the playoffs.
In Orton they trust?
Kyle Orton and the Buffalo Bills’ offense has been struggling lately leaving many to question if the veteran quarterback should remain the starter. Orton replaced second year signal caller EJ Manuel in week 5 of the season and has tapered off after a hot start. A weak performance against Gang Green could result in Manuel seeing some reps.
Obvious game plan
Kyle Orton threw 4 touchdowns against the Jets in week 8 as he took advantage of a decimated New York secondary. Look for Buffalo to use the same approach on Sunday as their rushing attack has been hindered by injuries. Running back CJ Spiller was lost for the year with a collarbone injury while Fred Jackson has been dealing with a lingering groin issue.
Wide receiver Sammy Watkins is a dangerous deep threat that can open up the offense while Chris Hogan has emerged as the second option for Orton in the passing game. Tight end Scott Chandler is also a receiving threat that can take advantage of space in the middle of the field.
Bringing the heat
The Bills front seven is one of the best in the NFL as they completely dominate at the line of scrimmage. Mario Williams (10 sacks), Jerry Hughes (7.5 sacks), and Marcell Dareus (10 sacks) generate a consistent pass rush that batters and bruises opposing quarterbacks. Add in the ability to stop the run (ranked 10th in the NFL) and it is no secret that it will be tough sledding for the New York Jets on Sunday.
Gang Green will have to come up with a creative game plan that can establish the running in order to buy time for quarterback Michael Vick. The Jets could also look to the quick passing game featuring wide receivers Jeremy Kerley and Percy Harvin in order to keep the Buffalo defense off balance.
Physical match-up
This will be an old school AFC East match-up that features two physical defenses that can take over a game. There will be a ton of pressure on Michael Vick and Kyle Orton to make plays under duress. The quarterback that handles the heat the best, will lead his team to victory.
