Officials: Mother, Child Rescued From Sinkhole In Liberty State Park

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – A young child and her mother were rescued from a sinkhole in Liberty State Park Saturday, officials said.

Carly Baldwin, spokeswoman for the Jersey City Department of Public Safety, told 1010 WINS the young girl went behind a barricade and fell into the sinkhole, followed by her mother who went to save her.

The cordoned-off sinkhole was about 5-6 feet deep, Baldwin said, and was believed to have been caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The two did not fall into the Hudson River and were rescued by park rangers and treated by EMS, Baldwin said.

Both mother and child were given blankets to warm up and were released.
