2 Lawmakers Seek To Have N.Y. State Abortion Law Mirror Roe v. Wade
ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two New York state lawmakers are pushing for an updated abortion law.
As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, right now New York state law permits abortions within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, allowing exceptions only if the mother's life is at risk.
State Assemblywoman Deborah Glick (D-Manhattan) is one of the sponsors of the bill, which seeks to make state law mirror Roe v. Wade – allowing for abortions within the first trimester.
Under current law, women can get an abortion beyond the first 24 weeks if the mother's health – mental or physical – is at risk.
The Republican-controlled state Senate has rejected the measure multiple times, but Glick said if independent Democrats and regular Democrats come together.
"We need assistance of the governor to broker a different tower sharing arrangement in the state Senate," Glick said.
State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) is also sponsoring the bill.
