Fallen NYPD detectives honored at Washington Heights 5K run

NEW YORK -- Runners honored murdered members of the NYPD before a race Sunday in upper Manhattan.

Mayor Eric Adams started the annual Washington Heights 5K after a moment of silence for Dets. Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora. The two were gunned down in Harlem in January after responding to a domestic violence call.

Rivera was part of the New York running community and a member of Dyckman Run Club.

"He trained with us to get in shape to become an NYPD officer and it's a special race because we used to run these very streets with Officer Jason Rivera, so we are here to represent and dedicate it to his honor, as well as Mora," a member said.

Some 5,000 adults took part in the 5K run, while some 500 children participated in a youth half-mile run and some sprinting events.

It marked the first time the 5K had been been held since the pandemic started.
