Police: NYPD Psychologist Emily Dearden Charged In Shooting Of Developer Husband
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Yonkers woman whose husband has accused her of trying to kill him in a 2013 shooting has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, according to police.
Emily Dearden, a senior psychologist with the NYPD, said nothing when she surrendered to police Friday morning with her attorneys, CBS2's Lou Young reported.
Police said her husband, Kenneth Dearden, was shot in the neck inside their home on Nov. 14, 2013.
Emily Dearden was released on $150,000 bail and a judge issued an order of protection for her husband and children. She's due back in court Dec. 22.
Dearden has also been suspended from the NYPD based upon an her arrest in the case, police said.
Sources tell CBS2 Emily and Kenneth Dearden, along with their two daughters, aged 11 and 14, have all been living in the same house for the past year.
"This is a loving mother. She's a wonderful mother and no court that reviews what has gone on with this family will require any kind of restriction on her," Emily Dearden's attorney Paul Bergman said.
Police were first told an intruder shot Kenneth Dearden while he slept, but detectives discovered the alarm had been disabled from inside the home and an antique Derringer belonging to Emily Dearden had been recently fired, Young reported.
The family's rottweiler also reportedly remained quiet during the shooting, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
She was seen leaving the home carrying a teddy bear and other belongings after her husband was taken to the hospital.
Kenneth Dearden sued his wife last week on allegations of adultery and attempted murder in connection with the incident.
Dearden's court filings called the shooting "a sadistic attack by an adulterous defendant" and claimed that Emily Dearden was "getting pressure from her lover to end the marriage."
He also claimed his wife was "caught washing the clothes she had worn the night of the shooting and asked if police had a warrant" when they returned to investigate further.
In court papers, Kenneth Dearden said he discovered his wife's boyfriend came to New York from Texas about the time of the shooting, pressuring her to end her marriage.
"With every fiber of her being, with every resource at her disposal, she's going to fight these baseless charges," Bergman, said.
Yonkers police and the Westchester County District Attorney's Office have been investigating the shooting, which police said included "the recovery of physical evidence and numerous interviews."
Kenneth Dearden is a major developer in Yonkers. Emily Dearden's job with the NYPD was to help screen incoming recruits. She was given strictly administrative duty several months ago and filed for divorce nine months after the shooting.
Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
