NYPD: Police shoot, injure man in Queens after he came at officers with knife
NEW YORK -- Police shot and wounded a man in Queens after he allegedly stabbed a man and came at officers with a knife.
It happened after officers responded to the area outside a church on 164th Street in Jamaica at around 4 p.m. Thursday.
According to police, a man with a knife was acting erratically. A woman ran inside the church and told a security guard, who confronted the man and was stabbed the stomach.
Police said the suspect refused to drop the knife when officers arrived.
"Our officers give commands to drop the knife, which he does not. Our officers discharged their firearms two times each, striking the individual two times. As he's on the ground, he still has the knife in his hands, he will not drop the knife. Responding supervisor utilized a Taser, " said NYPD Chief of Department John Chell.
The security guard and suspect were hospitalized in stable condition.
This was the second of three police-involved shootings in New York City on Thursday.
A few hours earlier, NYPD officers shot and killed a 78-year-old man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers when they responded to a burglary call at the man's Brooklyn apartment.
Thursday evening, officers shot a man armed with a gun at a Bronx subway station.
