Body found at playground in NYC's Central Park, police say

NYPD update on body found in Central Park

NEW YORK -- Police are investigating after a body was discovered Monday at a playground in Central Park

Investigators said a man was found dead at around 8:30 a.m. inside Heckscher Playground near Central Park South and 62nd Street.

Police said the man, who was approximately 36 years old, was found unresponsive and unconscious. Investigators said the man had several slash or puncture wounds to his stomach, chest and neck.

EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene.

"At this point in the investigation we have not made a full determination as to cause of death until the autopsy. However, our preliminary theory and investigation indicates that his injuries could have been self inflicted," NYPD Assistant Chief Ruel Stephenson said.

Investigators said a knife with blood on it was recovered from the pocket of the hooded sweatshirt the man had on.

The incident remains under investigation.
