NYPD Reports Huge Drop In Overall Crime This Year To Date

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Overall crime in New York City has fallen to the lowest level since the city started tracking crime, police said Monday.

As 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported, there were 97 fewer shootings across the city this year compared with last year, and 10 fewer murders – a drop of 3.7 percent.

The NYPD also said this past month was the safest ever in the COMPSTAT era, with 12 percent less crime overall compared with last year.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said those were not the only reductions.

"The amount of stop and frisk activity since its height in 2011 is down 97 percent," de Blasio said.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Operations Dermot Shea said with more precision-focused enforcement, gun arrests are up nearly 12 percent this year.

"Seventeen just this weekend alone," he said.

But there was one troubling statistic. Assaults on police officers were up 23 percent.

Shea said it is a sign more officers are putting themselves in harm's way.
